Limo Litigation

A limousine accident in 1997 which left a Red Wings star and masseur disabled, goes to trial next month with the eyes of the industry glued to every moment. Player Vladimir Konstantinov and the team masseur Sergei Mnatsakanov were involved in a limousine crash in Birmingham which has changed the course of their lives, but is now finally nearing an end.

The final lawsuit related to the accident is going to trial later this month and will be heard in federal court. This last chapter is related to the victims and will be held in Detroit, to seek compensation from the Ohio auto dealership who sold the limousine to the Michigan livery. The case involves product liability and the dealer’s liability is at issue, for providing inaccessible and defective seatbelts.

The original accident occurred just six days after the Red Wings’ 1997 Stanley Cup championship. Konstantinov, Mnatsakanov and former player Viacheslav Fetisov were riding in the limousine which was travelling through Birmingham, taking the team home from a celebratory golf game. On the way, the limousine crossed several lanes of traffic, mounted the median and crashed into a tree.

All of the passengers were thrown from their seats in the rear of the limousine, into the partition behind the chauffeur. None of the passengers were wearing seatbelts, but their attorney has already made the case that not all the restraints were available as some were wrapped in rubber bands and tucked under the seats, while others had faulty latches which couldn’t be used anyway.

The limo chauffeur says he blacked out, and while he only suffered minor injuries, it was later found that he had marijuana in his system and was given a nine month sentence for driving on a suspended license.

The passengers in the limousine still require around the clock care, over ten years after the accident and their families are looking forward to the case being closed and being able to put the tragedy behind them.
